Balian of Ibelin: History vs Myth

This is J Stephen Roberts and Deanna Proach's second podcast talk show. We were very excited to have Dr. Helena Schrader on to talk about Balian of Ibelin. Balian has been made famous as the lead character in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven. In this podcast Dr. Schrader discusses the myth versus the reality behind Balian. Dr. Schrader has written a novel about Balian's life entitled, KNIGHT OF JERUSALEM, which is available here:

The movie inspired me to learn more. Now I find the truth and incredible history. Sadly Hollywood can take great liberties with the truth. And the truth matters much more.

I despised this movie. Balian was heavily fictionalized for KoH The movie worked because it's a historical drama. Even a historically inaccurate historic drama still works as drama. Let's be serious about the historic inaccuracy, again. There was not even an attempt

Helena is a great writer and I cannot press that enough.. in the venue of Shelby foote as far as someone who is a writer and should do a history, for TRUE writers should do history to make it more understandable.

If Balian was portrayed correctly in the movie, he would have a 40+ middle aged man of noble stature with thick bodyhair and he would've been married and have kids... Or so I read.

I wish they would create a film which tells all the story about crusades and jihad. Because, The crusades were more as a defense tactical for Christian countries against all the jihad wars that Muslims were executing around the middle East and Europe. The crusades were only a few compared to the thousand wars led by Muslims. But sadly, the political correctness in this corrupt world would never allow it anymore.

Kingdom of Heaven was a terrible movie. Orland Bloom doesn't make a creditable knight. The truth needs to be told about the Crusades.

    • Sam Bakich
      Sam Bakich 3 anos atrás

Bill Gregory I understand entirely. However, having binged this series, I feel like the historical events would have made a much more compelling story. Of course the character would be altered to be more acceptable to modern palates, but to do what Ridley Scott did is to crap on history for the sole sake of propaganda. A good example of a compromise between history and narrative that sacrifices neither is Arn the Knight Templar.

    • Sam Bakich
Sam Bakich 3 anos atrás +4

Bill Gregory I think he means that Orlando Bloom's Balian did not have the world view, or demeanor, of Knight, acting more like a modern atheist. I definitely share that criticism. The actual events would have made for a much better movie.

  • Vital Mendoza

I stopped watching the movie when Orlando Bloom started the nonsense speech about fraternity with the good moors. The movie was childish shit from minute 1 but that speech was so grief I had to tell my friends an excuse to leave.

I have a question for the video author: Were there any battles during this time period in the Valley of Meggido? I ask because in the OT prophets there is a verse about the "Kings of the North shall set their thrones at Jerusalem" and looking at that verse through the eyes of history we can say proof-positive "yes" that event did happen with the Crusades. (Yet the writing of the Prophets is actually quite early. the Quran Scrolls have copies of Isaiah and Jeremiah that date back to 100 BC)

Perhaps, one day, we'll get a movie -- or at least a documentary -- that will tell a more true story. It would be nice if they fleshed out the role of the Hospitallers as well.

    • Gershom Patrioticus
Gershom Patrioticus 3 anos atrás +20

+Anthony Hargis Hollywood will do a story on the Crusades that makes the Catholic Crusaders look like monsters and the Muslims look like saints when in reality the truth was somewhere in the middle. I also did some research on a Statement often made about the Sack of Jerusalem that "the latin Knights broke into the city and slaughtered everyone, Christian, Jew, Muslim." and what I discovered was this: The population was NOT put to the sword but instead was ruled over by the Europeans. Logically speaking if the Christians in the city had been slaughtered, the Pope would have excummunicated the Knights and the commanding Kings and Barons asap for such an act. So then where did this false story come from? It came from Saladin's propagandist. It is quite possible that the Muslims (who retook the city from the Europeans) where the ones who slaughtered everyone in the city for being infidels and heretics and collaberators with the Europeans.

You people think it is simple. The personality of Saladin demonstrates that he felt more a prisoner than a King. Because in fact, rulers are prisoners. You people treat history beholding from above. You must treat history beholding everyone's free will, because each person is a world.

+abdallaha92 you should probably, check your sources, or if you can't be bothered watch the review of the movie on this channel.
      1. Raynald was not a Templar. So his actions can not be added to the Templars tab.
      2. Saladins ultimate goal towards the Crusader States was their destruction, the raids were often just a excuse, with which
      3. Raiding was a completely normal and common practice, Saladin raided, the crusaders raided, other Muslims raided, Europeans raided.
      4. Its true that it was the Templar Grand Master who convinced King Guy to march, but no opposed this, even through the sources tell us that they were all against it the day before. So the guilt is shared.
5.The Templars were not fanatics as often portrayed, we even have a Arab Muslim chronicler even calling them friends .....
