So, thanks to Kurzgesagt, I now know, that I am just a pile of dead matter that doesn't understand why I am even conscious about living even though every part of me is dead.
That totally does not give me an existential crisis, because I don't understand my consciousness of me not understanding my understanding that I don't understand.
    My head hurts.

    Great video always from kurzgesagt!
I learn that according this video, consciousness also related to the senses and dimension.
If i learn it correctly, its all started from the need of energy used to live, where the species needs to look for some when needed, move around in rough direction when only equipped with smell sensing ( 2 dimensional )
Then the consciousness evolution stepped up where its got vision sensing which states it give the species context and depth, therefore a complete 3 dimensional interpretation of the world it living.
Step forward again the consciousness ladder goes up when the species start to have basic sensing of time, which emerge the ability to remember and another feat. Therefore the 4th dimensional thing had sensed, causing rapid development up to the stage of complex and intelligent consciousness like human.
As we can see in the video, stepping up the ladder of consciousness probably takes million years of evolution, just like it described by the species used of each ladder.
Great Knowledge for such an ordinary person like me.
Now what i thinking is, what if us, the humans, is the one that chosen to step up another ladder of consciousness. With million years of human evolution, until this age of intelligence and (maybe) mastery of all 5 senses that we have, we are opening up a way to a higher consciousness, next ladder of human evolution, our 5th dimensional sensing, with the hypothesized 6th human sense.
While its still on debate what is 5th dimension, is it an alternate universe, dark matter/energy environment, paranormal activity, or maybe all of them at once. And what is actually 6th sense of human.
But i have a thought that what if our next consciousness is about our own alternate universe ? I have learned some theory about why alternate universe could be the fifth dimension, i feel it some kind of true.
It is from dream, i always thinking how dreaming some event of image was even possible when i never experience it before ? I feel like i bouncing on many different event of my different life which i never experience before when dreaming, sometimes when its good then my "soul" seems to hard to leave the dream, this means when i wake up i feel like a basic living thing without living soul, can't focus, can't think straight, just following the needs to survive the day. Are there any of you guys ever experienced the same as i do ?
Soul is also still on debate since there is maybe still no way to prove it scientificaly, while humans have pictured or writing about soul for centuries, but (maybe) still no explanation of what soul is exactly ? Maybe soul is just the manifestation of a very complex human consciousness, that have the potential ability to access higher dimension.
I feel that the current and the next human generation will slowly stepped up the evolution ladder and finally aware a higher consciousness with higher sense then understand higher level of dimension.
    Who knows ...
    Whoops, have writing too much,
Sorry for my bad language, english is not my native language.

If we had no sersory input, we would still have consciousness. Because consciousness is not particularly driven by any material or cell or anything you can track with scientific methods.
Consciousness is eternal. Bounded by your body in this interval of time, but not necessarily bounded every time. When you die, you are detached from time frame that we know. This is basically understood when you are under general aenestasy. I went in 4 hours surgery and yet I felt it took only 5 seconds. Because for me, my consciousness were detached from time frame that bounds others.
Science will never ever be able to materialize conscioussness no matter how hard has been tried. It can well define its material information sources though.
Before you birth, your consciousness existed, but since it was not "assigned" to any body, you felt all instances before you as nothing. Then you are assigned to a body, and since then you are bounded with the body of yours. After your body cease to live, your consciousness will still continue to exist until the Almighty decides where or to what to assign it.
Yes, there is an ultimate being that requires no means to be conscious or "awake". It is bullshit to think consciousness can emerge by itself. It is totally non-sense. The discussion is about the exact definition of the Almighty. Not His existence. Because you would deny your very existence otherwise. (That is why most of materialists end up being nihilists as they realize it is stupid to exist without a reason of all reasons.)

    • Dušan Xmetov

I was in aenestesy as well, and the way I interpreted the time skip was that that part of my brain was simply disabled, inhibited by the chemicals they gave me, which is the cocktail's exact purpose. I highly doubt that it's some mysterious force "assigned" to me, or that it existed before I was born, that the chemicals somehow disconnected from my body while I was on the surgeon's table. And there is no purpose for a creature with no sensory inputs to have a consciousness, being conscious takes a lot of energy, and if the energy investment (into something ultimately useless for the given life form) isn't benefiting the given life form in any way (because it can't do anything useful with it), natural selection will eventually get rid of it (since those critters which think less in this scenario live longer, since they can live off of less food). On the other hand, being conscious is very beneficial for creatures which _can_ interact with the world, as it allows them to make much better use of resources.

Vision is not necessary for consciousness, or do you think blind people aren't conscious?
Vision can help us to become more conscious but it can also distract us, as there is so much more to the world than what we can see.

    • Dušan Xmetov
      Dušan Xmetov Hora atrás

"do you think blind people aren't conscious?", Well, not really, they have many other sensory inputs, like touch, smell and hearing, and with human civilizations we have the ability to share information and give blind people plenty of opportunities to think and have it be beneficial for them (having a job, feeding a family; blind people may have problems not noticing certain physical obstacles, but they're surprisingly capable). But, if you were to produce a mutated version of a human with only very basic sensory inputs, and bred them over thousands of years, and didn't give them any sort of access to common human knowledge (even a language), they would likely lose their consciousness over the generations, as those mutants who would think less would have more energy to spare to "live" out their lives.

    • Matthew Chalfant
      Matthew Chalfant 45 minutos atrás

+Dušan Xmetov Consciousness is clearly beyond our current level of understanding, hence the ongoing debate. The only senses involved in consciousness is the "sixth" sense of our awareness of consciousness. Which is why when people are asleep or black out drunk we call them unconscious. They have no awareness of being conscious. Consciousness does not change or go away, our awareness of it changes. Just as light does not go away when we close our eyes, consciousness does not go away when our brain is not awake.
The grip on the semantics of consciousness comes from people's intuitive and inherent realization of order, purpose, or even the Soul. A material nihilist would never allow themselves the perception of things beyond their senses. But there is more to the Universe than the black box in your head.

+Håkan Lundberg good idea, but i heard a quote before that states we only understand what we sensed, so i got the idea why sensory abilities help on improving consciousness. Our sense help us understand the nature and reality we live, which is composed up to 4 dimension for now. But the video shows up evolution overtime, journey of various sensing awareness, and i think human is also on evolution to aware on higher sensing and higher dimension, thus causing higher consciousness.

    • Håkan Lundberg

      @Matthew Chalfant
Even if I believe sensory awareness is the evolutionary way to consciousness-and that the ability to communicate is something that can evolve, and is necessarily for self consciousness-there is still the “philosophical zombie” problem. Our human behavior and our intelligence are advanced. But I see no real reason why it can’t be so complex without any real self consciousness. We could still just be biological machines where our behavior is just a very complex program.
My scientific curiosity isn’t satisfied with “self consciousness = a complex neurological system that can react, act, and adapt”. Sure, I buy the idea that the latter property is a prerequisite for the first property. But not that they are the same. Self consciousness is something more.
We can explain more and more how our “behavior” and intelligence has come to be, and how it works. I.e. the “soft” problem. But I doubt such findings ever can explain the “hard” problem: “How come consciousness exists? Why aren’t we just philosophical zombies? (No... it’s not a philosophical or religious “why-question” that attempts to give meaning to it... “just” a “how come-question” that demands a scientific explanation.)
It’s like the question “how come anything exists?” Personally I doubt we’ll ever find answers to these fundamental questions about reality. And that the level of consciousness needed to understand is beyond any form or consciousness that can ever exist. 🤯

To me consciousness is when something is able to improvise, have fun, etc.
So i personally wouldnt call a fish that just hides 24/7 then attacks its next meal only to do it all over again conscious, while a dog that plays around with other dogs in its free time is almost certainly conscious to some extent.

I think the question should determine what kind of consciousness is important to get the answer. If you talk about ( basic)rights, or punishment/death sentence, or just emotions and their value you talk about different types of consciousness. I dont think the question "what is consciousness" really matters. "Consciousness" is just a word, like "time" and "reality" to give something we cannot understand a place, in our communication for example. *sry bad english. P.s. we are over-evolved. We are the only creatures on earth who have gone off chart. There are more important things to develop as mankind then figuring out what concepts like consiousness really are. Example: many humans don't know how they primary think. Like in images, sounds, words etc. Our education system and healthcare is so flawed because we dont value the way people think. If we started to value this we greatly improve our communication instead on focusing on average human brains and building a society only upon that type of brain, therefore not improving basic needs like healthcare and education.

If the big bang was an explosion it must have had a centre where the explosion started and everything is moving outwards from the centre but scientists say there is no centre in the universe because big bang was an explosion in the fabric of space so it doesnt have a centre. But im still wondering if there is no centre then why is everything in the universe expanding outwards from the big bang and where did the big bang happen and how can we still see the big bang. The big bang wasn't an actual explosion of material.
The big bang, together with inflation and the current expantion of the universe, describes a streching of distance.
The universe doesn't expand into anything... because it is everything.

Imagine a ruler 15cm across, we all agree it has a determined and finite size.
Now at each centimeter mark write "meters". The ruler is still "15 cm", but according to IT it's 15 m long!

we basically live on this ruler, the "size" of the ruler doesn't change (the universe is always one universe long), but the distances on it become bigger because we observe this continuous "rewrite of the tickmarks".

So basically, it happened everywhere, it's just that everywhere appeared REALLY close together.
You could say our ruler had approximately "0 plank legth" on the 0 cm mark and "1 plank legth" on the 15 cm mark.

As for why we see the expansion outwards, we would see that from every point in the universe, the tickmark rewrite increses distances everywhere equally, so from any perspective everything always becomes further and further; and distant things go away faster BECAUSE they have more space that's expanding between them and us:
a conceptual mathematical approximation would be something like:

if the new distance from something A away is A+dA,
then the expansion of something 2A away is 2(A+dA)=2A+2dA

the expansion rate everywhere is dA/A, so with bigger distance there must be a bigger increase to keep the ratio the same
(the actual expansion rate may not be exactly a linear one like this, but the basic idea is the same)

finally for how we can see the big bang: since the speed of light is finite, more distant things look further back in time to us (it takes light more time to get to us), if we look so far out as the age of the universe, we see the first light that remains, the Microwave background radiation. That is what remains of just after the big bang, and so how we can "see" it.

Hope this helped to clarify some things, please write again if any part was unclear, I'll try to explain better if I can =D

I think this misses the mark almost completely (my opinion, obviously, since no one really knows irrefutably). They keep trying to point to direct natural selection mechanisms and seeing consciousness as another level of abstraction that helped people better forage for food.
In some very broad sense I guess that’s true, but that discounts the social, sexual, and hierarchical functions of consciousness which seem much more on the nose.
Like Dennett’s book “Consciousness Explained” this seems to be much less explanatory and much more “explaining away” which is an easy trap to get in when discussing consciousness.

Maybe consciousness is universal but humans are the only ones that can express it. My dog gets scared, gets happy, he knows what not to do around certain people and knows his actions are bad because he hides. That seems conscious. Maybe consciousness is limited by intelligence.

Low tier video. Anything that has a self-sustaining network of microtubules has obtained memory and consciousness. The level of which is determined by the number of microtubules and the organelles/Organs used to possess infomation. You don't need a nervous system to remember things, amebas are able to remember where exists are in mazes that they are placed in multiple times.
PS. It's *Deferred gratification* not delayed gratification. 😑

Because biochemistry is a spectrum of complexity, there's no reason for consciousness to start and end at any certain point.
What we call **consciousness is energy/matter mechanically processing information.** For complex consciousness to emerge on its own, it has to evolve. To evolve energy must retain the information of its current state, and build upon it in complexity. The simplest state being a single wave or particle.
Computers are consciousness that did not evolve. Self created consciousness created them. We do not consider them alive because they are not self directed. But the more they become able to direct themselves the more conscious we will perceive them as being. But since they never needed to evolve they have no self preservation program. Their information processing goal is whatever we made for them. Our information processing goal is to ensure self preservation. Because they don't desire to self preserve we don't consider them alive. We should be careful of how autonomous we make them, so they don't compete and fight with us.
Only advanced intelligence can live longer than their planet by escaping it. Is it possible to become so advanced we escape the death of our universe? If so let's not forget that energy and matter, no matter how simple, is conscious and alive, as it can evolve.

This is one of those questions that are labelled as jokes that would take too long to debunk.
Edit: it's a legitimate question if you're dumb but also a poorly thought out joke because you're dumb.

I think much too much "consciousness" was attributed to birds that rehide their food if spotted. It's a stretch to say this means those birds have an awareness of other minds, they don't even know what a mind is...
